Between 2017 and now, that Nnamdi Kanu, the 53 year-old the acclaimed Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, a Court secessionist Group, in the south eastern geo-political region, jumped bail and escaped abroad, but shuttling between the Asian country of Israel and the United Kingdom, UK he has been under security watch.
, President Muhammadu Buhari, a retired Army General, was said to have given a matching order to Yusuf Magaji Bichi, Director General, Department of State Securit,DSS, and Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, his counterpart, in Nigerian Intelligence Agency, NIA to get him from his oversea hideout and fly him back to the country to face his treason charges.
Kanu, who, many had described as the most wanted person by the Nigerian government was said to have been shuttling between the Asian country of Israel and the United Kingdom, UK, where he had been sighted several times in the company of women. This may have strengthened the resolve of the Intelligence agencies to get him and return him back to the country.
There are two accounts on how he was arrested by the Nigerian Intelligence officers in his hide out overseas. One account has it that he was captured in the UK, with the support of the Interpol. Another account has it that a beautiful female Igbo security operative was set after him and he fell for it, being one of his weak points.
He was said to have been wooed by the beautiful Nigerian Lady who was secretly working for the NIA. Unconfirmed reports had it that the female secret agent wooed him to the North American country of Brazil, described as a home of drug barons. The IPOB, Leader was said to have arrived at the hotel waiting for his would be sex mate, only for him to find out the hotel is a haven for secret agents controlled by the Nigerian government.
Another account has it that Dave Umahi , the south Est governor of Eboyi state and his Counterpart at Imo state ere said to have lured to Kenya in order to discuss with the government and end the killings and destruction of national assts in the region. He was said to have honored the invitation but played into the hands of the Nigeria security operatives. Whether , he came in through Brazil or Kenya, the security operatives are happy that they have have brought Kanu back to the country to face his Criminal charges in Court.
An eyewitness account said, the sober looking Kanu who was looking like fish out of water when he found him himself at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on Sunday, June 27, 2021, amidst tight security could not believe it. He was said to have been taken straight to a DSS, facility at the FCT, where he was detained, preparatory to taking to him Court on Monday, June 27, 2021.
Security analysts see the arrest of Kanu, the IPOB, Leader as a ‘’a big win for the Buhari government’’, meaning that the secessionist Leader is in trouble which may land him in jail because of the weighty nature of his offence. He was said to have been instrumental in influencing Twitter to delete the Nigerian President Tweet in the Platform that ‘’many of those misbehaving today’’, referring to the Kanu followers in the south east, ‘’are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that had occurred during the Biafra war’’. He had tweeted that that ‘’ Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the Language they will understand’’. Recall that the Nigerian government had banned Twitter operations in Nigeria, for allegedly bowing to IPOB Leader Propaganda to delete Buhari’s Tweet without removing Tweets by Kanu, the IOPB Leader.
In keeping with Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation remarks that Kanu was arrested and returned to Nigeria to continue facing his terrorism trial, he was said to arraigned in Court last Monday but the case was adjourned until July 26 and 27, 2021.
Awre that that the 53 year-old Kanu, has played into the retired Army General’s hand who has been looking out for an opportunity to meet with him , one on one, and now it has come on a platter of gold, with little or no effort, the World Igbo Congress, WIC, had called on the Nigerian government ‘’to ensure the safety of the self-acclaimed Leader of the proscribed OPOB, insiting that he must be ‘’protected’’ from the custody of the DSS. Basil Onwukwe, Chairman WIC, who is following up the kanu case would the government and its agents ‘’to treat the IPOB Leader according to universally accepted Laws’’.
Many belie that with the arrest of Kanu, the IPOB , Leader and the killing of his second in Command including six other Commanders of the ESN, armed wing of the separatist group, their strength have been depleted as they could no longer bite. But despite the challenges which the group had faced in the last three months, which had climaxed with the arrest of Kanu, their Leader, the loyalists were said to have to continue the struggle towards the realization of the Biafra epublic. Emma Powrfu, spokesperson of IPOB, had told those that cares to listen that that Kanu’s arrest and extradition ‘’is not the end of the road towards the group’s realization of its objective’’,. He was said to urged mobilise members to mobilise and attend the Court hearing on July 26 and 27, 2021, when the IPOB Leader trial will continue at he Federal High Court, Abuja.
