 By Lateef Adegbite

Those who thinks that President Vladimir Putin of Russia is the one deliberately prolonging the Ukraine war may have to do a rethink.

The European Leaders push to get  Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s home country, Ukraine, to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO, a security Organisation, comprising of the 31 countries of Europe, United Kingdom, UK and the United States, US, appears to be funding the war  to test the military might of Russia using Ukraine as a cover up to force Putin to capitulate and come to the negotiating table for peace talks.

Ony recently, Representatives of Germany, France, Britain, US, UK and Netherlands, had met with Zelensky in Kyiv to plot the next line of action against Russia. The six western countries Representatives, who may have spoken the minds of their respective countries Leaders were said to have told the Ukrainian Leader that they were in Kyiv ‘’to encourage and support him to sustain the war against Russia. Tey were said to have urged him not to back out from the war as NATO. Member countries were solidly behind him.

President Zelenskyy updates NATO Representatives on Ukraine -Russia war

Zelenskyy, who had described the closed- door meeting with the European Leaders’ Representatives including that of US and UK, in Kyiv, which also had in attendance Mark Rutte, a former Prime Minister, pm, of Netherlands and now Secretary General of the European Union, EU, and NATO, had described the gathering as ‘’symbolic’’ and had expressed his appreciation to their support.

He was said to have singled out the Germany Chancellor Frederich Merz, for supplying the country with patriot systems, and the US, for weapon procurement through the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List, PURL, initiative and UK, alongside France for providing the country with cruise missiles.

The Germany Chancellor, may have followed the foot step of  the Swedish PM, Ulf  Kristersson , the Denmark, PM, PM. Mette Frederiksen,  Jonas Gahr Store of Norway and Maria Dick Schoof,  PM, of Netherlands, to launch the NATO’s PURL, initiative, with a funding package of US $500 million, for the purchase of   military equipment and ammunitions for Ukraine, described by Rutte, the  EU cum NATO, Secretary General   as ‘’a strong demonstration of Germany’s enduring commitment to Ukraine’s defence’’.

The cumulative total contribution of the five European countries under the NATO’s PURL, initiative according to Diplomatic sources based on the $500 million funding package each, was put at US $2,5 billion designed to meet Ukraine’s most urgent operational requirements with equipment and ammunitions sourced from the US, meaning that the US, alone had been bearing the burden of the Ukraine  war, described as for President Joe Biden’s war by Donald Trump, who had succeeded him in office, in January , 2023.

Prior to the Launching of the NATO’s PURL, by the five European countries, Trump was said to have pushed the US allies in NATO, to do more for collective defense   as the wolf is at the door in Ukraine. He had said that here is need for NATO member countries to boost military spending to five percent of their Gross Domestic Product, GDP, noting that it may not be the best solution but a step in the right direction. His major worries were that most of the European countries, particular, Spain, Italy could not comply with the payment, thus starving Ukraine of funds to replenish its stock pile of   US, weapons.

The Ukrainian Leader, was said to have also thanked Canada and Netherland, home country of Rutte, the EU, Secretary General, for their contributions to the PURL, package used for procurement of the US, advanced weapons to sustain the war.

Take for instance, since the beginning of the war, the Canadian government was said to have contributed US $6.5 million to the NATO’s PURL initiative.  Rutte, a former PM, of Netherland, until he vacated office was said to have earmarked billions of US, dollars for support for the Ukraine war through 2023.

The country’s new PM, Schoof, had said that 700 euros from PURL funds was invested in the production of drones for Ukraine. The PM, had disclosed that 3.5 billion euros, equivalent of US $3.8 billion, had been set aside to continue its support for the Ukraine war in 2026.

The British PM, Keir Starmer, may not have contributed to the PURL, NATO’s fund, but it was said to have supplied storm shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine that could strike deep into Russia, without being intercepted by any defense. missiles. The missiles were said to have been supplied by the British Prime Mister   to replenish Ukraine’s stockpiles ahead of the winter, when Russia is expected to intensify its attacks.

President Emmanuel Macron, whose  country, France  is  currently undergoing severe economic crisis having been kicked out from Sahel States of Burkina Faso, Niger Republic, Mali,  including the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, member countries of  Senegal, Tchad, and Madagascar and thus could no longer enjoy  the usual free  mining and export of mineral resources and rare earth elements, particular, Lithium, gold, Manganes and uranium or enjoy other befits from the former colonies from these countries  affected its economy  that it is now swimming in the ocean of debt.

In spite of the NATO countries, support for Zelenskyy to sustain the war against Russia, the Ukrainian army have continued to surrender in their large numbers as they laid their arms in Pokrovsk, the last Ukraine frontline in the Donetsk region to save their lives from the hands of Russian Troops instead of the blind loyalty to the Ukrainian Leader that could claim their lives.

Indeed, Russian Troops were said to have captured more Ukrainian regions in 204, than when the war had started be 2022 and extended to   2023 as Russia had decided to take the war to Ukraine to prove to the European Leaders, US and UK, that their weapons support to Ukraine could not stop the country from achieving its objective of invading Ukraine.

President Trump refuses to transfer Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine to stop escalation of the war with Russia

Meanwhile, the Trump, who was said to have met with Zelenskyy, on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, had rejected a deal to transfer the country’s long-range Tomahawk missiles to him to avoid escalating the war, on the grounds that tAmerica also needs the advanced weapons too to prepare for any attack from Iran, Venezuela, Russia or China.

This may have angered the Ukrainian Leader that he had described Trump of being ‘’afraid of playing into the hands of Putin.

However, Trump , appears to have bowed to Pressures from the Leadership of the EU, and the European Leaders, to have made a U-turn and now considering to supply the Tomahawk long-range missiles to Ukraine. This may forced Putin, to put the country’s nuclear forces on the alert as he had declared that the US, had crossed the ”red line”.

Many believes that Zelenskyy had already lost the battle, notwithstanding the NATO allies support and ought to have surrendered long ago to stop further devastation of Ukraine but had refused, insisting: ‘’No retreat no surrender.  The continued surrendering of Ukrainian Troops in the Frontlines, particular, Pokrovsk, which had collapsed speaks volume.

The initial demands of Putin to end the war was for Zelensky to surrender parts of the Donbas region, comprising of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kerson for a land swap but Kyiv and European Leaders would not take it. The situation is worse is worse now that Rusia, had forcefully take over the entire Donbas region with the last Ukraine frontline, Pokrovsk, captured

The question on the lips of most people was what Europe, UK and the US, is gaining for funding the Ukraine instead of looking for ways to end it as Ukraine is really no match to Russia, tough it has one of the strongest armies in Europe after Russia, which had been weakened considerably by Russia in the last three years.
