2023:’‘Nigeria Need A Leader With Character’’- Obasanjo

Those who think that the 2023 general elections in Nigerian would be based on political party affliction may have to do a rethink. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo may have given an insight on the direction of the elections when he said that it would be based on ‘’character’’ of the Candidate.
This is an indications that that the 2023 Presidential elections described as a three hose race between Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos state, and Presidential Candidate of All progressive Congress, APC, who believes that it is his turn to rule Nigeria after President Muhammadu Buhari, Atiku Abubaka, a former Nigerian Vice President and flag bearer of the Opposition People’s Democratic Party, PDP and Peter Obi, a former governor of the south east state of Anambra and Candidate of the Labour Party, LP.
The former Nigerian President who had been in consultations with Ibrahim Babangida, a retired Army General and former Nigerian military President and Gen. Abdulsami Abdusalami Ababubakar, rtd, a former Head of state, to sell his avowed ‘’national agenda’’ for a new Nigeria aimed at disallowing certain people from ruling Nigeria had said that the problem the country have had over the years was because ‘’we have not had a leader with the right character that should be trusted’’.
It is not surprising why he may have thrown his weight behind Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the LP as part of the political alignment and realignment ahead of the 2023b polls. Hear him: If I put my hand on someone, it mmeans that comparing him with the other, I see that there is merit that will be of benefit to Nigeria. Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the President of the Yoruba, socio-political Organisation Afenifere, according to Obasanjo stanjo stands for the same thing.
Appearing at the Ohaneze Ndigbo National Secretariat in Enugu, Capital of Enugu state , alongside Pa Adebanjo to sign the Condolence register opened for Mbazulike Amaechi , First Republic minister of Aviation , who was said to have died at the age of 93, he had said that the late Amaechi was not able to witness ‘‘ the new Nigeria that he had labored for decades where’ ‘equity , justice and fairness reigned’’. Obi, the LP Presidential Candidate was said to have also showed up at Enugu at the same time to sign the Condolence register, showing the closeness of the trio.
As if the endorsement of the former Anambra state governor to be the next President of Nigeria after Buhar , by Obasanjo Pan Adebanjo led Afenifere was not enough to convince Nigerians that there is going to be a new political alignment and realignment of forces in 2023, no fewer than 5,000 Bishops , Primates and Imams under the agonies of Faith alliance were aid to have declared their support for the LP Presidential Candidate ahead of the general elections. The Anambra state governor believes that Tinubu and Atiku, the APC and PDP, Presidential Candidates, are the two leading Candidates for next year’s presidential elections.
He had said that the two Presidential Candidates are the two front runners for the 2023 presidency of Nigeria describing the other Presidential Candidates jostling to take over from Buhari after the 2023 general elections ‘‘exciting drama.
Prof. Soludo , who has never failed to tell Nigerians his mindset had said that the truth remains that ‘‘ ‘‘there are two persons and parties seriously contesting for the President’’, describing the rest as ‘‘exciting drama’’. He had said that the state is open ‘‘to receiving all the Political parties Presidential Candidates who should come and sell themselves to the people of the state’’, meaning that the state is an open space for any Candidate.
There are fears in political circles that going by the tension in the country, it may be thrown into crisis if the wrong Candidate is declared the winner of the 2023, Presidential elections. This may have informed why the attentions of the international Community are focused on Nigeria to ensure that the 2023 elections was conducted peacefully.
Joe Biden, the North American country of the United States, U, President, who had met with six African Leaders on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, including the Katsina state born Nigerian President may have pressed for a ‘‘free elections in the Continent’’.
The Nigerian President may have known that he cannot afford to throw the country into crisis as he had said that that Summit for Democracy organised by President Biden of the Us became a necessary mechanisms to strengthen and ensure that Nigeria witnesses another’ ‘peaceful transfer of power after the 2023 general elections’’.
The Nigeria President was said to have assured the US President , whose government was said to have budgeted $50million for technical assistance and support , trainings for Civil Society Organisations to support the 2023 elections, transparency and other elections processes,including working on the Information Technology , IT, systems in as well as providing adequate support for the Mhmood Yakubu, a Professor, led Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure a free, fair and eligible general elections in 2023, in the country.
Buhari had said that the Administration remain committed ‘‘ to putting in place and strengthening all necessary mechanisms to ensure that ‘‘the country will not only record another peaceful transfer of power to an elected Democratic government but will ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner’’.
He may used used the opportunity provided by the US Preident Democratic Summit to reassure that the African Leaders that ‘’Nigeria will continue to actively support the democratization elections processes in the West African subregion and the African Continent at large’’.
